8:00 pm Woody Holler and His Orchestra

Woody Holler grew up hearing the songs of the cowboy. Although he was later trained in opera, a sense of belonging and nostalgia held him close to the early Western genre. Influenced by the crooning styles of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as the rustic blue yodeling of Jimmy Rodgers and danceable swing of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, he developed his lyric yodel on the wide-open spaces of the Canadian Prairie. Woody Holler's orchestra consists of Winnipeg's finest folk/jazz musicians, creating a unique western swing style that Holler defines as "jazz from the saddle". Richard Moody on violin, Greg Lowe on guitar and Daniel Koulack on double bass add clever arrangements that are rich with virtuosity and style. The repertoire is eclectic, fun and fascinating, featuring finger-snapping swing beats, honey-slowed love croons, and show stopping "extreme" yodeling. Woody Holler was nominated for the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards

9:00 am to 4:00 pm Mushroom Safaris in the Mabel Lake Area

Wild Mushrooms could bloom like crazy this fall! The late spring and summer, cooler temperatures and moister soils could beget an amazing variety of wild mushrooms in a fascinating array of sizes, shapes, colors, textures and aromas in our forests, fields and lawns this fall. Vernon is on the doorstep of the Mushroom Capital of the world, the Columbia Mountain range, where the greatest diversity of mushrooms is found.

Award-winning nature tour guide, Roseanne Van Ee, conducts guided Wild Mushroom Safaris in the Mabel Lake area for people wanting to experience this incredible display of intriguing fungi. The full day tours are fun and informative excursions through the woods to view all types of mushrooms from spiny, white Coral Fungus to huge, bright orange Lobsters. Photographers, artists, gardeners, cooks, naturalists, hikers, mycophiles (people who like mushrooms) and anyone with a sense of curiosity will enjoy these tours.

The afternoon includes a session on how to use the best mushroom field guides as the books can be quite confusing to use until you've been given clear instructions and helpful hints. We guarantee anyone who spends a day out on a Mushroom Safari will be hooked on wild mushrooms forever! Participants are encouraged to bring cameras.

Choose one of the prescheduled Mushroom Safari dates or arrange a private tour for groups of 8 or more on any other mid-October day. Adults (19+) $59 Youth (4-18) $36 Child under 4 free. Book your Tour On-line or by Calling Direct 250-545-7446.

The Number 14 is a Canadian success story extraordinaire! In an amazing theatrical tour-de-force, six of Vancouver's finest physical performers strut, swing, sing and talk their way in and out of adventures aboard Vancouver's #14 bus that is part Monty Python, part Mr. Bean and wholly engaging. Stemming from a series of improvisational skits and showcasing the talents of the performers, this slice of urban city life has been wowing audiences and winning awards around the world since its debut in 1992, and will be returning to Vernon as part of the Farewell Tour.

7:30 pm The North Okanagan Community Concert Association presents “Musica Intima ”

Internationally renowned for their engaging stage presence, impeccable musicianship, and unique perspective on ensemble singing, musica intima has earned a reputation as Canada's most exciting vocal ensemble. Twelve professional artistic directors/singers make up the group. Lloyd Dyck of the Vancouver Sun said "the flexibility and agility that are a function of their small size is partly what makes them so exciting." But what makes musica intima truly unique is they rehearse and perform without a director. In concert, they engage the audience with a spontaneity and directness all their own.

5:15 pm The Vernon Film Society Presents “Beasts of the southern wild”

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Beasts of the Southern Wild is the stunning debut from first-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin. Arguably the soul of the film, newcomer Wallis delivers a passionate and intense performance as the defiant and imaginative young heroine. Existing entirely in its own universe, Beasts of the Southern Wild is equal parts mythological, anthropological, folkloric, and apocalyptic. An emotionally wrenching and heartfelt portrayal of the bond between a father and his daughter, it is not to be missed.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 each on sale a week in advance at the theatre and the Bean Scene.

7:00 pm Stuart McLean & The Vinyl Cafe

Stuart McLean is known as "Canada's favourite storyteller" and after accomplishments in 2012, it's not difficult to see why: 2012 has been a landmark year for the best selling author. His hit radio show The Vinyl Cafe is now heard by 1.3 million people each week. The show is broadcast on CBC Radio in Canada, on close to 100 public radio stations in the USA and on around the world on Sirius Satellite Radio 159 and podcasts. In January, Apple named The Vinyl Cafe the best audio podcast in their "Best of the Year" awards.
In addition to the popular Dave & Morley stories, the show also features live and recorded music by both up-and-coming and established Canadian musicians. Increasingly, it is becoming a place where Canadians go to find new, undiscovered talent.
Stuart has sold over 1 million books in Canada and this fall he is celebrating the release of his new collection of Dave & Morley stories: Revenge of the Vinyl Cafe. This will be Stuart's tenth book.
