Michael V. Smith works across many creative genres, most notably as a writer, filmmaker, and performer. Smith's most recent book is Soundtrack: a lyric memoir, a poetic look at growing up and coming out in the shadow of AIDS, all through the lens of music albums. His work has won many prizes for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers, Director's Choice at the Cinema Diverse Festival, and a Western Magazine Award. Erin Scott (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist who works in time-based mediums including poetry, performance, and video/audio. They create publications and performances across forms including spoken word albums, books, exhibitions, drag performances and Fringe shows. Erin holds an MFA and is currently a PhD candidate at UBCO in Digital Arts and Humanities where she makes videopoems and writes about Scottish Gaelic, land, and identity. She lives on the unceded lands of the syilx nation, in Kelowna, with her four children and partner.
We'll read some of Erin & Michael's writing, and then discuss and learn from their unique skills and techniques to enhance and enliven our own good writing.
