Trail rating: Easy
Just above Kalamalka Lake and below Highway 97 lies Vernon's flattest, widest paved trail. Walk, wheel, push or pull your way along the old highway route for up to 2.5 km, minding the occasional car on the road.
Park at the local's favourite Kal Lake Lookout scenic viewpoint and admire Kalamalka, the lake of many colours.
At the lookout, Camel's Hump, and the snow-capped Monashee Mountains create a stunning backdrop to the Coldstream Valley to the east.
To the north are the Foothills along Silver Star Road; home to the most popular section of the Grey Canal trail just below the subdivision. Above the Foothills and to the right is the rounded peak of Silver Star Mountain.
Above the highway the greyish green big lump of a hill is an exposed limestone cliff. This is evidence of the limestone intrusion that contains the calcium carbonate crystals that make Kalamalka Lake a marl lake. The crystals floating in the warm summer water reflect sunlight creating a kaleidoscope of varied violet, blue and green colours.
Head south along the old road for the best views of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and its ecosystems of dry rock faces, sweeping grasslands, forested slopes, sandy bays, beaches and trails.
Join up with the Okanagan Rail Trail to extend your walk.
