1. Visit the Starlight Drive-In Theatre
You've never seen movies like this before.
On the way to Enderby lies a timeless experience that you'll never forget. Only a half an hour drive from Vernon, the Starlight Drive-In Theatre is the last of its kind in BC. Bring a friend and some blankets, and tune in to new releases under the stars. Check out their website to see what's playing now, and to get your tickets!
2. Go Thrifting
Sustainability is always in style.
Vernon has a number of thrift and consignment stores, hiding all kinds of gems that are waiting to be found. Whether you're scouring the small shops downtown, like Carousel Consignments or The Georgette Thrift Shop, or hunting in our larger locations such as Value Village, Plato's Closet, or the Salvation Army Thrift Store, reusing and rewearing has never looked this good.
3. Explore the Local Lakes
What better way is there to cool off than jumping in one of the city's beautiful surrounding lakes? Whether you prefer the colourful waters of Kalamalka or the iconic expanse of Okanagan Lake, there is no shortage of shoreline and beaches to explore. Some sandy staples include Kal Beach, Juniper Bay, and Kin Beach, all perfect for sun-soaked days spent tanning, picnicking, and swimming around. If you'd rather stay dry, Kalavida Surf Shop offers rentals for paddleboards and kayaks, and is conveniently located right at Kal Beach so you don’t have to drag your gear around.
4. Experience BNA Brewing
If you’re looking for a cool but classy atmosphere and somewhere you can stay late with your friends, BNA Vernon is the place for you. With both a restaurant and a variety of activities available for guests, this night out simply makes itself. Groups can reserve one of four 10-pin bowling lanes, one of their three duckpin bowling lanes, or play a casual game of shuffleboard or bocce ball. They're open until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, so you can relax, eat, and enjoy the ambiance at your own pace.
5. Take a Hike
If you’re looking for picture-worthy views, Vernon has many trails that show off the natural beauty of the land. Kalamalka Lake Park holds many hiking trails that are staples for locals. Make a loop out of Comin' Round the Mountain, Cosens Bay Trail, and Corral Trail for a hike that has great views and interesting terrain. Another local favourite for views is Camel’s Hump. This 6km out-and-back trail just past Lumby features a breathtaking panoramic view at the peak. Or, venture up to our ski mountain, SilverStar Mountain Resort, and take the gondola to the top to hike through the wildflowers and gaze out over multiple mountain ranges. Wherever you hike, remember to stay on the trail and leave no trace.
6. Play Board Games
Challenge your friends to the ultimate board game showdown at the Boarding House Cafe. This cozy space holds more than 300 board games, so you are bound to find all the games you know and love among the stacks, as well as plenty of new ones. Indulge in a sweet treat while you play, or order some food from their menu. This cafe has everything you need for the perfect board game day.
7. Enjoy Our Local U-Picks
The Okanagan Valley is known for its abundant fruit orchards. Whether your favourites are sweet cherries, peaches, apricots, or apples, Vernon has it all. While hunting through the local markets and fruit stands is always fun, the best way to feel fully immersed in the valley and farmland lifestyle is to pick the fruit yourself. Support local and start your hunt for the best bounty at u-picks like Ringo-En Orchards, Peter’s U-Pick, Dukhia Farms U-Pick, and Bright Angel Farm. Not only will you make unforgettable memories, you’ll come away with delicious fresh fruit to enjoy and share.
8. Try Rock Climbing
Do you feel like everyone's getting into rock climbing these days? Are you wondering what the hype is all about? If so, go check out Vernon's very own indoor climbing gym - The Rock Garden. Rock climbing allows you to test your strength, practice problem solving, and hang out with friends. The Rock Garden features mostly bouldering, which is climbing without ropes, as well as a wall of rope climbing. With plenty of beginner friendly routes and rentals for gear, all you have to worry about is having fun.
