You can rock climb to your heart's content in every season in Vernon. We have some of the finest natural rock climbing areas in the country, as well as an indoor rock climbing facility.
Vernon's first and only indoor rock climbing facility, the Rock Garden Climbing Center has 19 vertical feet in over 4,000 sq. ft. of air conditioned comfort with a bouldering section, top-rope, and lead-climbing. Routes were designed for every level of climber from first time to mountain goat experience.
A favourite for rock climbers, Cougar Canyon has 13 routes in eight crags with grades from 5.7 to 5.11a. There are some bolts already in place. Climbers can hike in from the Cougar Canyon parking area located in Kalamalka Lake Park just south of Vernon.
Ellison Provincial Park
Head over to the northeastern shore of Okanagan Lake to Ellison Provincial Park: 200 hectares of forested benchlands. The rock at Ellison is solid and clean. The main cliff is located between the dog beach and the main beach. This crag is known for top roping, easy trad leading and hard sport climbing.
Unique rock features, polygonal basalt originating from volcanic activity rising up to 22m from the ground, make this area seem like it’s out of this world. It is a 45 minute drive out of Vernon on forest service roads so it’s recommended that you have a suitable vehicle and read the how-to's on driving FSRs. There are complete directions, photos and ratings in the Aberdeen Guide Book.
