One’s Own Theatre Ltd., in collaboration with Big Apple Productions, presents Little Women: The Broadway Musical at Vernon’s historic Powerhouse Theatre.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s enduring novel, Little Women features music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and a book by Allan Knee. The acclaimed musical premiered on Broadway in 2005, with Sutton Foster earning a Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of the fiercely ambitious Jo March.

At its heart, Little Women is the story of four sisters coming of age during the American Civil War, but its questions remain strikingly contemporary. How do we become ourselves without losing the people we love? What happens when our dreams take us somewhere our families cannot follow? And how do we hold onto one another through love, loss and change?

This is the Broadway musical, not a traditional stage adaptation of Alcott’s novel. Funny, romantic, exuberant and deeply moving, the musical follows Jo March, an aspiring writer with an extraordinary imagination and an unwillingness to accept the life the world has planned for her, and the family she loves fiercely.

Alongside Jo are the unforgettable March sisters: romantic Meg, gentle Beth and irrepressible Amy; their steadfast mother, Marmee; charming next-door neighbor Laurie; Mr. Laurence; and the people who enter their lives as the sisters grow from girls into young women.

Their story is filled with first love and heartbreak, sibling warfare and tenderness, enormous dreams and devastating loss, all brought to life through a rich contemporary musical-theatre score.

And you don’t need to have read the novel to fall in love with the March family.
